Lisbon and the Coast
Situated on the north banks of the River Tagus, the charm of Lisbon exists in its strong links to the past. Its renovated palaces, magnificent churches and an impressive castle mirror the city’s rich cultural heritage. Its eclectic blend of neighborhoods, culture and architecture distinguish this capital city uniquely from the other European capitals and make it a truly fascinating and comprehensive city to visit.
Twenty miles from Lisbon , the Estoril coast is composed of several little villages. Estoril is a cosmopolitan resort with good beaches and palm lined avenues, luxury hotels, good restaurants, golf courses and one of the largest casinos in Europe.
Porto
Porto, or Oporto, is Portugal’s second largest city and capital of Portugal’s beguiling north. Known mainly for its trade in Port wine, which travels along the east-west trending Douro River, Porto has for its long history been known as a cosmopolitan trading center. There is an array of architectural gems from the Roman, Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassic and Renaissance eras in this scenic city built into the granite cliffs at the mouth of the river Douro.
Oporto is also known for its characteristic sailboats, the “Barcos Rabelos”, which used to ship Port downstream from the vineyards. These days the famous boats are used for an annual race held in the city in June every year.
Algarve
The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal and is amongst one of Europe’s favored holiday destinations well known for glorious, year round sunshine and excellent sandy beaches. The Algarve is undeniably beautiful; breathtaking cliffs, golden sands, natural bays, scalloped beaches and long sandy islands with waves lapping at the shore. Outside the tourist enclaves, there are quiet castle towns, flower-covered hillsides and enchanting stretches of shoreline still untouched by development.
